Many of you know that I have been involved with taking photos of homeless animals, in the hopes of finding them homes. I became the PR and marketing director of HeARTs Speak this year and have been working on several projects to further this goal.
HeARTs Speak recently applied for BarkBox’s Hugo Challenge. Out of 50 applicants, we have been chosen as one of the TOP THREE finalists! The winner will get $10,000 to fund a unique project that helps animals in shelters.
We will use the funds from the Hugo Challenge to spearhead the HeARTs Speak Shelter and Community Training Initiative. Our plan is to work with 2 of the largest high-kill shelters in the country. (Carson and South LA are in the mix of choices) We will provide each shelter with digital cameras, lenses, lighting equipment and backdrops.
A team comprised of HeARTs Speak members will present a two-day workshop in which we will train shelter employees and volunteers to utilize this equipment to create the types of photographs that get animals noticed, and adopted quickly.
These workshops will be professionally filmed and made into a training video. The end product will be a tool that HeARTs Speak can share with shelter workers and animal advocates across the globe. To reduce the number of animals killed in shelters each year we need only to shift the public’s perception and increase adoption by a small percentage.
